Freestyle (What Is Freestyle??)

Freestyle rap

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freestyle is a style of rap, with instrumental beats, in which rap lyrics are improvised, i.e. performed with no previously composed lyrics, and "off the top of the head". It is similar to other improvisational music such as jazz – Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship describes it as being "like a jazz solo"]where there is a lead instrumentalist acting as the improviser and the rest of the band providing the beat. Rap battles are sometimes improvised in this way. However, most modern battles are prewritten weeks before the actual battle to give the paying audience in large forums a better show. Prewritten battles were previously frowned upon, and were cause enough to dismiss a participant from a battle.
Originally, in old school hip hop of the 1980s, the term "freestyle" referred to a pre-written rap verse that was not on any particular subject matter, but rather was written for the purpose of demonstrating skill.[9] The term is still occasionally used in this way, though since the 1990s, the majority of today’s artists use it to mean improvised rapping.[1]

Original definition

In the book How to RapBig Daddy Kane and Myka 9 note that originally a freestyle was a written rap on no particular subject – Big Daddy Kane says, “in the ’80s when we said we wrote a freestyle rap, that meant that it was a rhyme that you wrote that was free of style… it’s basically a rhyme just bragging about yourself.”[10] Myka 9 adds, “back in the day freestyle was bust[ing] a rhyme about any random thing, and it was a written rhyme or something memorized”.[6] Divine Styler says: “in the school I come from, freestyling was a non-conceptual written rhyme… and now they call freestyling off the top of the head, so the era I come from it’s a lot different”.[11] Kool Moe Dee also refers to this earlier definition in his book, There's A God On The Mic[9]:
"There are two types of freestyle. There’s an old-school freestyle that’s basically rhymes that you’ve written that may not have anything to do with any subject or that goes all over the place. Then there’s freestyle where you come off the top of the head.[12]"
In old school hip-hop, Kool Moe Dee says that improvisational rapping was instead called “coming off the top of the head”,[13] and Big Daddy Kane says, "off-the-top-of-the-head [rapping], we just called that "off the dome" — when you don’t write it and [you] say whatever comes to mind”.[10]
Referring to this earlier definition (a written rhyme on non-specific subject matter) Big Daddy Kane says, "that’s really what a freestyle is”[10] and Kool Moe Dee refers to it as “true”[14] freestyle, and “the real old-school freestyle”.[15] Kool Moe Dee suggests that Kool G Rap’s track ‘Men At Work’ is an “excellent example”[14] of “true”[14] freestyle, along with Rakim’s "Lyrics of Fury".[16]

Newer definition

Since the early 1990s onwards, with the popularization of improvisational rapping from groups/artists such as Freestyle Fellowship through to Eminem’s 8 Mile, "freestyle" has come to be the widely used term for rap lyrics which are improvised on the spot. This type of freestyle is the focus of Kevin Fitzgerald’s documentary, Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme, where the term is used throughout by numerous artists to mean improvisational rapping.[1]
Kool Moe Dee suggests the change in how the term is used happened somewhere in the mid to late ‘80s, saying, "until 1986, all freestyles were written,"[17] and “before the ‘90s it was about how hard you could come with a written rhyme with no particular subject matter and no real purpose other than showing your lyrical prowess."[14]
Myka 9 explains that Freestyle Fellowship helped redefine the term – “that’s what they say I helped do - I helped get the world to freestyle, me and the Freestyle Fellowship, by inventing the Freestyle Fellowship and by redefining what freestyle is… We have redefined what freestyle is by saying that it’s improvisational rap like a jazz solo”.[6]
Although this kind of freestyling is very well respected today,[1] Kool Moe Dee states that this was not the case previously:
"A lot of the old-school artists didn’t even respect what’s being called freestyle now...[14] any emcee coming off the top of the head wasn’t really respected. The sentiment was emcees only did that if they couldn’t write. The coming off the top of the head rhymer had a built-in excuse to not be critiqued as hard[17]".

Methodology of improvised freestyle

Many rappers learn to rap through improvised freestyling, and by making freestyling into a conversation or a rhyming game which they play frequently as a way to practice, as described in the book How to Rap.[18] Reasons for freestyling include entertainment, as a therapeutic activity, to discover different ways of rapping, promoting oneself, increasing versatility, or as a spiritual activity.[19] Improvised freestyling can also be used in live performances, to do things such as giving something extra to the crowd[20] and to cover up mistakes.[21] In order to prove that a freestyle is being made up on the spot (as opposed to something pre-written or memorized), rappers will often refer to places and objects in their immediate setting, or will take suggestions on what to rhyme about.[6]
Freestyles are performed a cappella,[1] over beatboxing (as seen in Freestyle[1]), or over instrumental versions of songs. Freestyling is often done in a group setting called a "cypher" (or "cipher") or as part of a "freestyle battle".[1] Due to the improvised nature of freestyle, meter and rhythm are usually more relaxed than in conventional rapping. Many artists base their freestyle on their current situation or mental state, but have a ready supply of prepared lyrics and rhyme patterns they can use as filler. Freestyling can also be used as a songwriting method for albums or mixtapes.[22]

Types of freestyles

freestyle battle is a contest in which two or more rappers compete or "battle" each other using improvised lyrics. It is a prominent part of hip hop culture.
In a freestyle battle, each competitor's goal is to "diss" their opponent through clever lyrics and wordplay, with heavy emphasis being placed upon the rapper's improvisational ability. Many battles also include metaphorically violent imagery, complementing the "battling" atmosphere. It is considered dishonorable or shameful to recite pre-written or memorized raps during a freestyle battle, because it shows the rapper to be incapable of "spitting" spur-of-the-moment lyrics. A live audience is key, as a large part of "winning" a battle is how an audience responds to each rapper. Appointed judges may be used in formal contests, but in most cases the rapper who receives the largest audience response is viewed as the victor.
In modern times, with the rise of leagues such as King of the Dot and Ultimate Rap League, most battles are written with some freestyling incorporated into the verses. This allows for more intricate rhymes and insults.
The idea of such poetic battles has a long history that can be found in genres of poetry such as Haikai and flyting.[23] As hip-hop evolved in the early 1980s, many rappers gained their fame through freestyle battles. Battles can take place anywhere: informally on street corners, on stage at a concert, at a school, or at event specifically meant for battling (such as Scribble Jam or the Blaze Battle).
cypher or cipher is an informal gathering of rappers, beatboxers, and/or break-dancers in a circle, in order to jam musically together. The term has also in recent years come to mean the crowd which forms around freestyle battles, consisting of spectators and onlookers. This group serves partly to encourage competition and partly to enhance the communal aspect of rap battles. The cipher is known for “making or breaking reputations in the hip hop community; if you are able to step into the cipher and tell your story, demonstrating your uniqueness, you might be more accepted".[24] These groups also serve as a way for messages about hip hop styles and knowledge to be spread, through word-of-mouth and encouraging trends in other battles.[25]

To Beef or not To Beef by No-One

To Beef or Not To Beef?
(by No-One)

I can't recall a time in living memory when relations between producers, artist's, promoters, managers and the fans in Otjiwarongo was so bad. There has been a complete breakdown of co-operation and a rapid rise of bottled emotions between one another.
The consequences of all this vibe killing studio sessions, lack of giving your artist the sound he/she/they deserve, sidelining fellow musicians or going around door to door fabricating lies about your fellow musician or human (not to say hatred is mutual or the case). The deal is confrontation isn’t implemented, the truth will never be presented. People will never learn to keep their lanes and do them.
When I conveyed my dismay to my friend in the early hours of 4am Thursday(6th of June), he answered that in this respect of music that Otjiwarongo produces, beef is better off ignored. For when I say ignorance is bliss Otjiwarongo is too small for this kind of controversy but yet it continues silently sometimes in your face.
Meetings were held in the near past to try and figure out what was there to do about it all but with no avail.
The Democrats (Negative One's) as I like to call them still continue with the story mixing, backstabbing and unprofessional breakdown of productivity whilst
The Visionaries (Positive One's) keep doing what God intended them to do, be an Example to the young, using talent where talent is needed and most of all showing the rest of Namibia that not only did Maszanga (Hasho, Pedro & Key) come from Otjiwarongo which maybe they and some may have forgotten (lol) Otjiwarongo being the home of miracle kid and hit maker of To My Girlfriend, Kaanave and Story of my Life (which has a video on the way) Tulisan or as I like to call him Waka Li Mask then Obie And Jayden being the freshmen on the scene and blowing away more than just hate-filled residences of Otjiwarongo not forgetting all the household names like Kalux, Taeni Real, Ab-Pro, Preezy, Carlito, Jane&Noxi, BlizzVideos, Kallo and many more not mentioned who try to uplift the music in all of us in their own and very different ways.
Gone are the days when the two parties would collaborate to make a song for the “just” reasons. Gone are the days when the two parties would go to a show, perform and the next day talk and laugh about all the blunders. Now all you get is artist wanting to get performance platform last minutes and when they don’t get it they get angry. Now two parties share the same studio but both have a different vision. I say prosecute a war or tackle an economic crisis because where money is involved nothing is impossible. Is the root of all evil money as they say no your brain is. The devil is a liar you just don’t see it.
Now, my initiative is to make this public and justify what really the problem is so I went out of my way and questioned a few producers, artists, video producers and promoters asking them:

“How Do You Feel About All The Beef  Controversy Surrounding Otjiwarongo”?

This is what they said:

Abraham Ab-Pro Amushila
(Producer-Instrumental)
First of all we finaly getting somewhere, artists ,producers ,show organisers, sponsors and even an audience have been built. It took us more than 8 years counting from 2006. I don't feel good about it and will rather not even get involved, I'll work with each and every artist prepared to pay consultation fees. On the other hand I'd like to encourage everyone that when beef starts we look disorganised and therefore possible sponsors will take us for a joke. Therefore we need to set up a meetng to address the issue, competition is good beef aint. Lets appreciate each others artwork and strive for proffessionalism. The reason you see others struggling to come out is because of the lack of unity. Lets share ideas and build a foundation that we can make a living from.

In addition to that we must give props to people like Taeni Real, Carlito(Ynot), Obie and Jayden, Tulisan, Kallo, Kalux, Preezy, Salmi Enkali, VirmosBar for contributing to make this profitable so far so this is stil peanuts. So Thus no beef

Jane Cloete
(Artist-RnB/Afro-Pop)
Uhm i think its really unnecessary since we from one town and need to stand together not turn against each other! We're supposed to build the town's music and put Otjiwarongo on the map. We should help each other because we all are not good at everything and we need one another. Its really a painfull thing to see fellow men not getting along. :-(

Blizz Videos
(Producer-Videos)
Chai looking at them and seeing how they going on about beefing shows they are not matured I myself knows a few of them that talk behind my back and pretend infront of me but the thing is you all not there yet some of you not registered, stop bluffing and prove us wrong with your work, go out and work, let the people from other towns know then comes the beef. They are all broke a** niggers, Blizz works with everyone its business for me not beef so if you can't join me bite it.

Steve Stevie Boss Tjizu
(Artist-Rapper/Singer)
Anyways theres no beef just that Otjiwarongo is small and everyone wants to do music and its resulting in people not wanting others to progress or succeed. And I personally think when it comes to music guys are buying face, acting to be cool but talking sh*t behind ur back so ja MAN IN SY BAN and see you on top

Keith Flykidd Toomar
(Artist-RnB)
My view on this is that some niqqas are envious of other niqqas succsess. They always player hating because sh*t works out for someone else and nat 'em #Nufsaid

Dynamite Dominic
(Artist-Rapper)
For me it's just childish we need to support each other do the thing we love doing, MUSIC, lets unite and learn to appreciate our talents and not hate.

Prince PreezyBeatz Mweti
(Producer-Instrumentals)
Lets get straight to the fact, jealousy is the issue here, and that's the bad energy that is keeping the music art from growing. Its all about who's the best at this or who's the best at that. The moment any artist in Otji does a nice track and gets a little buzz going, there's always people that come out and try and put the artist down. Too much hating can make you an addict, and right now there are a lot of addicts, lol. Instead we should learn to support. If something is good i'll let it be known. For now I'll advise artists to just work hard in silence, accomplish your goals, do great music, stay silent even when someone wants to beef with you, and most importantly stay very humble and let the music do all the talking for you. I'm also keen on working with artists in Otjiwarongo, so serious artists should halla. Already have some good packeges for few artists already done. There's alot of talent in Otjiwarongo and now is the right time to bring it out. But first lets humble ourselves, thats the key. So good luck to everybody.

In conclusion nothing will ever get resolved if we act as if we were still 5 year olds arguing over a piece of candy. Music is a sign of happiness and if yall beef yall aint loving the music. Beef isnt part of Music never was atleast not in the way yall administer it.
in short YOU BEEF YOU SUCK!!
im Out..
